Frantz saumon

Montlouis sur Loire, Loire, France

Not from a family of winemakers, Frantz started his own project in 2002 after a few stints as a forester in both France and throughout Canada. He slowly acquired land, building up to the 4.5 hectares he farms today. He established his domaine in Montlouis-sur-Loire in the Loire Valley, a region known for salty, mineral infused Chenin Blancs that neighbors Vouvray. He has always practiced organic and biodynamic agriculture and makes his wines in a variety of fiberglass and stainless-steel tanks as well as wood vessels of different sizes. All the wines the are fermented naturally, including all of his sparkling wines which are pétillant naturel or pet nat for short.

Frantz’s is always looking for clean wines and thriving for dryness. Though a huge proponent of natural wine, pouring his wines at Pénitents every year, one of France’s most important natural wine fairs, Frantz has little patience for traditional wine “faults” like volatile acidity.

In Montlouis, Frantz works about 5 different Chenin vineyards with a variety of soils. He also farms a small plot of Pinot Noir. Soils include the famous pure tuffeau, a very hard limestone found in the Loire that has very little clay topsoil. He also has sites with clay over limestone, clay with silex and clay with broken down limestone. The vineyards average between 20 and 50 years old, with some consisting of vines that are between 70 to 100 years old.
